FAMOUS CELEBS @The Best of Hollywood Tribute Exhibit

Now on its third installment, Velvet Channel's The Best of Hollywood: A Tribute Exhibit held its opening recently at the Archaeology Wing of the Power Plant Mall of Rockwell, and was attended by the most sought-after celebrities and prominent personalities in the world of fashion and entertainment. The event was the second leg – the first being the exclusive screening of the Natalie Portman-starrer Black Swan – in the channel’s events to usher in the live telecast and complete coverage of the 83rd Academy Awards to be hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway on February 28, Monday.

The one-of-a-kind exhibit features creative outputs from fifteen creative teams who were tasked to produce fashion editorial-like photos and their interpretations on their assigned Hollywood films. Velvet gathered top photographers and assigned each one of them a Hollywood movie that has made an impact in fashion and style. In turn, these experts behind the shutters chose their own team of stylists and make-up artists/hair stylists. Among the celebrities who were transformed into fashion/movie icons inspired by a character or characters from their assigned award winning movie were BEA ALONZO, HEART EVANGELISTA , DIEGO MAPA, TESSA PRIETO-VALDES,  KIM CHIU,  MIA AYESA,DIEGO CASTILLO,MEGAN YOUNG, LANCE HOWARD, DANIEL MATSUNAGA, FABIO IDE, HIDEO MURAOKA, DENY BARROS, RICH HERRERA & RICH HARDIN, EMPRESS SCHUCK , ANTON DEL ROSARIO & CHRISTOPHER CAMCAM OF THE PHILIPPINE AZKALS,  MAI KAUFMAN, ROCIO OLBES, VANIA ROMOFF, BIANCA ROQUE, ROBBIE CARMONA, ERIK CUA, STEPHEN KU, MITCH MALLI, GP REYES, ZSAZSA PADILLA, JULIA MONTES , DENNIS TRILLO, JEWEL MISCHE and  JOHN LLOYD CRUZ

Giselle Bundchen and the Ipanema GB Hot Sands Collection

HOT, HOT, HOT
Giselle Bundchen. Brazil. Truly, these names evoke vibrant visions of color and music---sunny beaches and sunkissed, bikini-clad bodies, street parades and dancing. And that's a fact.

Thus, what we saw when we walked inside the SM Prestige Lounge of SM Megamall was a refreshing Brazilian beach setting during the launching of Ipanema’s new Gisele Bündchen Hot Sands Collection, a colorful, summery and simply stunning collection of nature-themed footwear, the epitome of Brazilian life.

“The collection embodies the best of Brazil and its locals: warmth, optimism and great joy in living, a country that keeps its eyes on the future and always reinvents itself.  This carefree and joyous lifestyle is the inspiration behind the collection – each piece celebrates the beauty of nature, making it the footwear to complement the sunny season of summer,” said Patxi Elizalde, managing director of ELRO Corporation, the exclusive distributor of Ipanema in the Philippines.

Young models, wearing Coco Cabaña’s swim wear creations and the GB Hot Sands  colorful flip flops with the trademark bow design, sashayed infront of the local media in a short fashion show during the launching of the new collection. Oozing with the Brazilian essence, the GB Hot Sands collection is available in a wide-array of versatile, uber chic footwear from gorgeous platforms to sexy sandals and is sure to be the hottest trend this summer.

DIABETES PROFILE IN THE PHILIPPINES

Four point one (4.1%) of Filipinos have diabetes mellitus. At the current estimate of the population, this means 2.5 million Filipinos with diabetes, with perhaps an equal number which remain undiagnosed.

Diabetes mellitus is a disease of the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, and of insulin itself. This lead to elevations of the blood sugar, and the appearance of sugar in the urine. When uncontrolled over the long run, diabetes can produce devastating complications. Diabetes mellitus can lead to blindness, kidney failure and gangrene of the extremities. People with diabetes are more prone to develop high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

It is said that one is not born with diabetes mellitus. However, one is born with predisposition to develop it. A predisposed individual is one who may have close relatives who are diabetics or who has a cell type which renders him very susceptible to these triggering factors. Many predisposed individuals may ward off the appearance of the disease.

What are the triggering factors of diabetes? Obesity is a major triggering factor for diabetes mellitus. The increase in body weight reduces the effectivity of insulin in various tissues. Multiple pregnancies make the woman, so predisposed, to develop diabetes, especially after the third pregnancy. Various physical and emotional stresses may trigger the appearance of the disease in the predisposed individuals. Certain hormones, drugs and other medications may act against insulin to render it less effective, and thus also trigger the appearance of the disease. Viruses may attack the beta cells of the pancreas causing destruction of some of them, the destroyed cells then act to incite the formation of anti-bodies which will now destroy the remaining beta cells, - a process of self destruction which leads to the type of diabetes which is insulin dependent. Thus, one who has diabetic relatives should not overeat, and should always exercise to prevent undue weight gain.

Did you know that :

The recently revised USDA dietary guidelines now include exercise. The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2000 recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily for adults (preferably more) and at least 60 minutes for children.

It happens that both carbohydrates and protein will raise blood sugar in a diabetic and insulin levels in a nondiabetic. Fat will have no effect on either. Fat is a freebie. (Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: A Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars (Little Brown, 1997). His Web site is www.diabetes-normalsugars.com .)

The glycemic load (GL) is a relatively new way to assess the impact of carbohydrate consumption that takes the glycemic index into account, but gives a fuller picture than does glycemic index alone. A GI value tells you only how rapidly a particular carbohydrate turns into sugar. It doesn't tell you how much of that carbohydrate is in a serving of a particular food. You need to know both things to understand a food's effect on blood sugar. That is where glycemic load comes in. The carbohydrate in watermelon, for example, has a high GI. But there isn't a lot of it, so watermelon's glycemic load is relatively low. A GL of 20 or more is high, a GL of 11 to 19 inclusive is medium, and a GL of 10 or less is low.(Ref. Mendosa.com Living with Diabetes)

SOME HELPFUL TIPS:

Favor nutrient-dense, whole foods. That means reduce your intake of sugar and other "empty calorie" refined carbohydrates (white flour, white rice, etc.) in favor of complex carbs (whole fruits, whole grains, whole starchy vegetables, etc.). Avoid fried foods and other foods high in saturated or hydrogenated fat.

Avoid or reduce non-foods and "anti-nutrients" (foods that can create extra nutritional demands by forcing your body to work harder). That means reduce your intake of alcohol, caffeine, soft drinks and foods that are high in artificial ingredients or have little nutritional value of their own.

Although there are some who disagree, an increasing number of nutritional experts are recommending that you pay attention to the glycemic effect of foods and gravitate toward foods or combinations of foods that don't raise blood sugar too quickly. The glycemic effect is more of a factor for some people than others, but it is a recurrent theme among many nutritional experts.

DIABETES AWARENESS WEEK

In 1993, former President Fidel V. Ramos signed proclamation 213 declaring every 4th week of July as Diabetes Awareness week.

Its objectives are:

1. To promote awareness of diabetes through:

    a.) Early Detection
    b.) Educational Programs

2. To prevent the onset and progression of complication through promotion of     healthy lifestyle and mass screening program.

DIABETES CENTER: ANSWERING THE NEED FOR
DIABETES EDUCATION

The main thrust of the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation is to provide an intensive education program on diabetes.Though more than 2 million Filipinos are afflicted with diabetes, the vast majority of the population - including many of the victims themselves - know very little or nothing at all about the deadly disease.

Diabetes is so complex and so demanding that proper education becomes an important and integral part of diabetes treatment. All diabetes patients must learn the proper diet, correct exercise, continuous medications, proper care of the teeth and feet, correct usage of blood tests, daily record keeping.

There is quite clearly an urgent need for proper diabetes education.
The Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation aims to provide an intensive education program on diabetes by establishing a Diabetes Center in Metro Manila. The Center is envisioned to one, train trainors who will man the satellite educational clinics of the Foundation; two, create and develop educational materials on diabetes prevention and management; and three, supply all its satellite clinics with these educational materials.
The creation of the Diabetes Center will be the answer to the ever growing need for proper diabetes education.

FEB.25 CONCERT SCENE: Abs-Cbn Jazz Night

ON FEB. 25 BIGGEST NAMES IN JAZZ TO PERFORM LIVE IN MANILA

To jazz up more this season of love the Philippine Jazz and Arts Festival 2011, in cooperation with Lifestyle Network and Metro Society magazine,  proudly bring the much-anticipated ABS-CBN Jazz Night, featuring most sought after jazz artists—Grammy-nominated Fourplay, Mishka Adams and saxophonist Jon Irabagon—on February 25, Friday night at the Rockwell Tent, Makati City.

For almost 20 years now, contemporary jazz quartet Fourplay has been enjoying consistent artistic and commercial success by embedding elements of pop, R&B and a variety of other genres to their stanch jazz creations. In the course of a dozen recordings—six of which have climbed to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Album charts—Fourplay has continued to explore the limitless dimensions and permutations of jazz while at the same time appealing to a broad mainstream audience.

Mishka Adams, on the other hand, became interested in jazz at the early age of three. Mishka’s first initiations into music were old songs, including those of Joni Mitchell, which she listened to as a child. She then took saxophone lessons at 10 and by 14 she was already singing jazz. It can be recalled that Mishka was invited as guest artist at a major event organized by the British Council (Manila)—a music spectacular “Jazz in Time,” featuring the UK jazz legend Courtney Pine and Cameron Pierre, one of CANDID’s artists. Her impeccable rendition of Billie Holiday’s signature song “God Bless the Child” earned this young talent the immediate admiration of the audience.

Saxophonist Jon Irabagon, who studied music at the prestigious DePaul University, has steadily made a name for himself since relocating to New York in 2001 to pursue further studies at the Manhattan School of Music. For the past few years, he’s earned plaudits for his work in the gonzo freebop quartet “Mostly Other People Do the Killing.” Last year, he made an impressive debut as a leader with his band Outright! With these projects and as an in-demand sideman, he routinely erases the boundaries between hard bop and free jazz, excelling at both approaches.

For tickets on the ABS-CBN Jazz Night, call/text 0920-9509624, or e-mail pijazz@gmail.com. SUCHERO, A Truly Pinoy All Natural Sweetener

Sweet Like Sugar Minus Its Harmful Effects
  • No additives
  • No artificial flavors
  • No preservatives
  • No coloring
  • No chemicals
  • Unfiltered
  • Unbleached
Diabetics, dieters and other individuals trying to control their sugar intake have never had it this good. The vote of confidence for a new sweetener out in the market made from the cocosap of organic coconut trees is shared by doctors, bakers, chefs as well as food exporters, according to Jose Villa, director of Suchero, the all-natural brand positioned as a healthy alternative to sugar.

Bound by a common belief that they found a product that will be a healthy innovation and commercially viable at the same time, not only in the local but also in the international markets, the three frontliners of The Chumer Group---Antonio Magcase, a professor; Vida Pamatian, a mother-cum-businesswoman and Jose "Joey" Villa, an engineer---restarted a more thorough study of the sweetener produced from the sweet toddy collected from the coconut sap (the unopened inflorescence) of the Philippine's tree of life, the coconut tree.

Through the traditional process of evaporation, the sap when cooked on slow fire in the company's modern facilities, was converted into SUCHERO granules, a healthy, all-natural sweetener, and  100% organic. The cocosap produce a caramel-tasting sweetener which does not have the bitter after-taste of many of the sugar substitutes available today. Better yet, the cocosap, which is Suchero’s lone ingredient, becomes a low glycemic sweetener, according to Villa.

SUGAR RUSH AND HIGH ENERGY IN A SACHET
The glycemic index or GI measures the effects of carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. The real problem is carbohydrates, and that's what the glycemic index is all about. Foods high in fat or protein don’t cause your blood sugar level to rise much. Carbohydrates, like refined white sugar, that break down easily during digestion and rapidly release glucose in the bloodstream have a high GI. In turn, high GI foods signal the body to produce high levels of insulin which tax the pancreas. When consumed over the long run, high GI foods may lead to diabetes.

So a low GI food will cause a small rise, while a high GI food will trigger a dramatic spike. A GI of 70 or more is high, a GI of 56 to 69 inclusive is medium, and a GI of 55 or less is low.
In contrast, low glycemic sweeteners like Suchero are broken down more slowly which means gradual, and not sudden, releases of glucose into the blood stream. While cane sugar has a glycemic index of 60, Suchero’s GI is only a healthy 35, says Villa, who cites a comparative study done by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology.

“We have invested in a purpose-built facility with modern equipment that allows us to impose strict quality control,” he explains. To make a mark in the export market, nevertheless, a certification of product safety from SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is necessary. Suchero secured its SGS certificate this year and the necessary approvals from the Philippine Food and Drug Administration last year.

AVAILABILITY
An engineer by profession, who came back to the Philippines after several years working in New Zealand, Villa and his two other partners are aiming to export Suchero and position it as a more affordable, all-natural sugar substitute. He notes that in places like North America and Australia and New Zealand, there is high demand for natural sweeteners. Those being sold in New Zealand supermarkets are going from NZ$24 to NZ$32 a box. “We will offer Suchero for only NZ$18.”

Villa emphasizes that doctors in a number of major Manila hospitals have made Suchero available to their diabetic patients, because of its consistent high quality standards that ensure low glycemic levels. Aside from being available in their doctors' clinics,Suchero is also available in leading supermarkets in the metropolis, including especially in Landmark and Robinsons Supermarkets.

Suchero is available in individual 5-grams sachets that are resealable and packaged by 12s (mini), 15s (tipid), 55s (big) and in the food service pack of 250s, and in 350-gram and 1-kilo pouches which are more convenient for cooking and baking. Among Suchero’s newest products is its premium variant, which is close in color to white cane sugar. This was developed especially to sweeten juice drinks and for baking pastries traditionally made with white sugar.

SWEET CONCOCTIONS MADE HEALTHY
Meanwhile, Suchero’s owners demonstrated the authenticity of their brand’s claims at the recent launch held at Chateau 1771Greenbelt 5, by serving various desserts made by a popular supplier of no-sugar added pastries, LowCal Café Co.

LowCal Café partner Lindy Santiago served French Apple Torte with Crème Anglais and Pistachio Sans Rival without burdening the sugar levels of guests – thanks to Suchero. Santiago observes that as a sugar substitute, Suchero delivers the right amount of sweetness appreciated by her sugar-conscious clients without altering her treasured recipes.

Santiago, who with cousin Tanya Pico first started making desserts with sugar substitutes for health reasons, is typical of the Suchero user. She started baking with sugar substitutes as a reaction to a dreaded disease that many suspect is aggravated by high sugar levels and which runs in her family line. Eventually she and her partner realized that the demand for no-sugar-added desserts was pretty strong. “People these days really don’t like to take in too much sugar because they want to keep healthy,” she observes.

All of us who attended the launching were so impressed with the desserts, they're sweet... in fact no one can tell the difference if the concoctions we're eating have been mixed with real sugar or Suchero! There was a unanimous clamor for Ms. Lindy's contact numbers for future orders of these Suchero laced confections.

GRENDHA LAUNCHES "All About You Campaign"

Keeping In Step with the Active Chic Woman

Filipino fashionistas have a new reason to fall head over heels with shoes as leading Brazilian footwear brand, Grendha, together with Zee Lifestyle magazine launched its All About You campaign in Davao City recently.

Putting women’s elegance and well-being at the forefront of the campaign, Grendha’s looks meld chic and comfort as they showcased their latest collection. The aptly named campaign jives perfectly with Grendha’s tag “for the woman that you are”, as it puts the modern fashionista’s needs and wants in the spotlight. Grendha’s footwear collection serves as a vibrant celebration of feminine style, with a wide array of styles to choose from that are innovative and sophisticated, yet highly comfortable.

“This campaign is a fitting tribute to the modern, independent woman,” remarked Patxi Elizalde, managing director of ELRO Corporation, the exclusive distributor of Grendha footwear in the country. “Every Grendha pair oozes with style, class and comfort, perfect for every woman on the go. The campaign aims to deliver this message.”

For the campaign, Grendha picked six additional hip and young women to be its All About You ambassadors who represent beauty, independence and chic attitude inherent in every modern woman. They are breast cancer survivor Bernie Aboitiz; working mom June Alegrado; a certified foodie and educator Rochelle del Rosario; shopaholic and blogger Andrea Aldeguer; young stylista Krystle Uy; and independent working woman Kristy Tesoro

“These women are the perfect ambassadors for the campaign,” said Elizalde. “They are smart, passionate, and driven. They know what they want, whether it’s in fashion or in life! They are true role models for the woman of today.”

Grendha launched the campaign’s website, allaboutyou.com.ph, featuring testimonials from celebrity endorsers as well as its latest line of footwear. At the site, fashionistas can sign up and share why they think they are a Grendha woman to be able to get a chance to win their favorite pair of Grendha footwear and other hip and fashionable items from Grendha.
